Whitefish Picked as Top 10 Coolest Town in America by Budget Travel
Whitefish was picked by Budget Travel as one of America's Top Ten Coolest towns
More About this Event

Folks who live here have known it for a long time.

But a national travel magazine has just picked Whitefish as one of the 10 Coolest Small Towns in America for 2009. In the October issue of Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel Magazine, Whitefish is featured as one of the editorial staff’s picks for up-and-coming, affordable travel destinations nationwide, all with a population under 10,000.

“Every now and then you stumble upon a town that’s gotten everything right—great coffee, food with character, shop owners with purpose,” begins the feature article, which goes on to highlight ten “Main Street, U.S.A.” places to help readers discover affordable, close-to-home destinations with enough character and edge to sustain even the biggest city dwellers. In the feature, Whitefish is noted as a place where “ski bums and urban refugees congregate.”

“Each year we scour the country for the 10 Coolest Small Towns in America, and we’re especially excited about this year’s finalists,” said Budget Travel, Editor in Chief, Nina Willdorf. “Whitefish rose to the top for its mix of folksiness and style. Residents definitely have a strong sense of pride in what they do, and they’re just as passionate about the rugged natural surroundings as the food and theatre scene.”

Willdorf admits that it’s not an exact science as to what makes a town “cool”— but in general, there were three markers: you have to be able to get a good cup of coffee and excellent food, when people leave for the big city, they realize they’ve made a mistake and come back home, and lastly, you'll see more art galleries than country stores.

“This is a great audience for us with 2.2 million readers who are looking for what we offer in their destination travel planning,” said Whitefish CVB Director Jan Metzmaker. “We target this type of editorial through our public relations program with a focus on value, beauty, culture and sense of place. Our program brought one of the editors here for a press trip several years ago and since then we have been included in several articles. It’s nice to see our efforts are paying off.”

“I thought it was pretty cool to hear that the rest of the country has discovered something we have all known for many years,” said Mike Jenson, mayor of Whitefish. “I was born here and when we were young, a lot of people couldn’t wait to leave. We were just a little railroad town. But I never found any place I liked better. So after I got over the stigma of not being able to come home after college, I came home. It’s great for our town to get the recognition.”

Other cool towns include Cayucos, California, Lexington, Virginia, Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, Tubac, Arizona, Wallace, Idaho, Saugerties, New York, Mount Vernon, Iowa, Jacksonville, Oregon, and Rockland, Maine.
