A Perfect Day in Whitefish - May
A local's guide to a perfect May day

A day in Whitefish with my best friend is the things dreams are made of. May is a wonderful time to visit NW Montana as the light jacket weather temperatures are ideal for all of the outdoor pursuits that await us. With a big day ahead of us we would start off the day enjoying a caffeinated beverage from Montana Coffee Traders en route to the Bar W Guest Ranch, located an easy 4 miles outside of downtown Whitefish. The inviting Western feel of the Bar W Guest Ranch is evident the moment we arrive on the property. We’ll saddle up for a two hour trail ride around Spencer Mountain taking in views of the Flathead Valley, Spencer Lake and maybe even some wildlife! After saying our goodbyes and snapping a few selfies with our wrangler and horses we’re off to grab some lunch. Destination, Tea Kettle Asian Kitchen located in Stumptown Marketplace and featuring asian-american cuisine.

Now that we are refueled it’s time for us to hit the trails with our canine friends on the Whitefish Trail. The Lion Mountain trailhead checks all the boxes as the 3 mile loop is dog friendly, close to town and even has a scenic overlook of Skyles Lake. A 3 mile hike is plenty for me but my 80 pound black lab is just warming up. We’ll burn off my dog’s remaining energy at the Hugh Rogers WAG Park, a 5 acre pup paradise located right in Whitefish at Armory Park. The dog park features an agility course, pavilion, dog wash, and a pond which is perfect for my water loving lab.

After a day full of activity and adventure I think it’s time to relax and indulge with a massage at Whitefish Massage Therapy. A 60 minute massage should relieve any sore muscles earned throughout the day. Where to have dinner is our next order of business and we’ll head to INDAH Sushi for some outstanding sushi and ambiance. My favorite rolls are the Platinum Roll and the Great White Buffalo, they never disappoint, paired with some sake from their sake list. After dinner we’ll retreat to our house and conclude the day next to a fire as a good Montanan should.
