Spectacular hiking in the Flathead National Forest

The Jewel Basin Hiking Area is a unique 15,000 acre hiking area maintained exclusively for hiking and camping located in the Swan Range, with views looking into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. This high mountain area is popular for backpacking, fishing and plant and wildlife viewing.

Majority of hikes start at the Camp Misery trailhead east of Bigfork.

A popular route is the Mt. Aeneas Trail #717, which takes hikers past Picnic Lakes to the summit of Mt. Aeneas.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:

From Whitefish, take Hwy 40 to Columbia Falls. 40 turns into Hwy 2. Turn Right on MT Hwy 206 South.
Turn left on Hwy 35 S. Turn Left (East) on Hwy 83 to the junction of the Echo Lake Road. Head north on Echo Lake Road about 3 miles to junction with the Jewel Basin Road (No. 5392). Follow this road approximately 7 miles to the trailhead. CAUTION: The last 5 miles are steep. Use headlights for safety. Caution advised for low clearance vehicles. Trailers not recommended.
