A locals guide to October in Whitefish

It is a cool, crisp morning as we rise from bed to greet a glorious blue bird October day. After setting a plan for a day filled with fun, we load the truck with gear and head for a breakfast at Loula's to set us straight for a day of adventure. If we don't get the special, we almost always order the Eggs Benedict. My son gets pancakes, eggs and bacon - his standard breakfast wherever we go.

After filling our bellies, we head west out of town to the Beaver Lake section of the Whitefish Trail. My husband, Tim is a seasoned mountain biker and our son has quickly learned that it is his favorite outdoor sport after downhill skiing. Me, I'm just learning the ropes and we've found that this trailhead seems to give us all what we require for a fun but not outrageously strenuous ride. Our dog, Gypsy could think of nothing else that she would rather be doing before the snow flies and I'm happy knowing that she'll be good and tired when we're done.

Back at the trailhead we bump on down the road a couple miles to Murray Lake where we hop in our canoe for a leisurely cruise and a picnic lunch. The turning larch are positively glowing in the afternoon sun and the huckleberry bushes have turned a gorgeous magenta. A quick 15 minutes off the water and we're home, with plenty of time to get ready for the day's finale.

Dinner tonight is a special experience in Whitefish – a paired beer dinner to celebrate the bounty of fall. At the Great Northern Brewery we sit at a long community table under the brewing tanks and appreciate all the goodness that the farmers and ranchers of the Flathead Valley have spent their summer cultivating. The menu is sourced from a variety of these special folks and lovingly paired with a selection of Great Northern Beers by none other than my fantastic husband, who incidentally is an amazing chef. As I sit and listen to him explain the details of each pairing, I look around at the faces of my community surrounding me, each of them contemplating, appreciating, and I feel in awe that of all places, this is where I landed. I am home, and I couldn't think of a better place to spend a day in any month.
