Explore the Jazz Realm with John Zoltek

May 11th, 2018, 7:30 pm, at O'Shaughnessy Cultural Arts Center, Whitefish, MT

One Night Only! Maestro Zoltek plugs in his guitar and dives into his “musical alter ego” for an evening of his own tunes and arrangements for jazz combo and strings. The O’Shaughnessy Arts Center transforms into "Z" Jazz Club with table seating and refreshments for a true “cabaret” experience.  Mezzanine seating overlooking the band also available.

The evening will support our "Youth Music Experience” an outreach and education program of the Glacier Symphony.

Description

Maestro Zoltek’s new quartet will consist of well known local bassist Paul Faessel, saxophonist Dan Rose, a recent returnee to the valley following jazz studies in Miami, FL where he worked with Shelly Berg, Bruce Hornsby, Bryan Lynch, as well as reggae superstar Damian Marley. Completing the quartet is drummer Adam Greenberg, from Bozeman who has played with Jeni Flemming, Pinky and the Floyds and is currently leader of the Bridger Bing Band. The quartet will perform original music by Zoltek that draws from a vast collection of musical experiences ranging from jazz to rock to classical. Many of the pieces were written just for this event.

Glacier Symphony Music Director and Conductor, John Zoltek leads a double life. His day job as artistic leader of the Glacier Symphony and Chorale consists of setting the concert repertoire for the entire season, rehearsing and conducting the orchestra and overseeing a mountain of details for the 30-plus classical musical performances held each year. He is also an adjunct music teacher at Flathead Valley Community College. But there is another side of maestro Zoltek, that of a jazz guitarist, and it is at the root of his love for music.

In recent years, John has experienced a rekindling of interest in developing his technique and performing as a guitarist. This has led to numerous local collaborations and occasional gigs, ranging from subbing in with Latin Jazz ensemble Cocinando, to forming Liquid Jazz a standard jazz group, to last year’s Trio performance with bassist Ron Reeves and drummer Don Caverly. More recently, John has been exploring eclectic modern jazz fusion idioms, writing for a new Quintet. Even though Zoltek’s time is largely taken up by his commitment to the Symphony and his symphonic composition, he plans on continuing his journey back to the guitar.
