Glacier National Park in Winter
The Quiet Season of Glacier National Park

The quiet season of Glacier National Park is the winter, when the crowds thin and the bears go into hibernation.

Snow shoe or cross country ski along the shores of Lake MacDonald. Want a guide? Glacier Adventure Guides does full and half-day excursions.

Apgar Visitor Center is open weekends from October-May. Ranger-led snowshoe hikes are available. Walks will be on Saturdays and Sundays from from January through March. The two hour walks will depart from the Apgar Visitor Center at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Snowshoe rentals are available.

More About this Attraction or Experience

It's a sleepy and peaceful time of year to visit the park, and while most services are only open during the summer months, the famous Going to the Sun Road is plowed to the Lake McDonald Lodge from the West Entrance, offering visitors the chance to cross country ski or snowshoe on the snow-covered road.

No motorized travel is permitted off roads during the winter, so the sounds of 4-stroke motors won't shatter the peaceful silence that envelops you in the quiet woods with magnificent mountains sleeping peacefully by the frozen shores. (Bikes are also not allowed on any closed road or trails in the Park.)

Park Pass or $15 vehicle entrance fee
