More About this Business

Each menu item is designed keeping in mind both the seasonality and locality of ingredients. We believe in working with area farmers to provide our guests with the finest goods harvested in their peak of freshness. We employ creative techniques and apply attention to detail throughout the entire process. No dish is complete without careful consideration of flavors, textures, and appearances of each component, as well as the effect each has on the other.

Part of our menu changes each evening so that we can take advantage of these seasonal goods as they become available. One component of the nightly offerings is the Chef's Tasting Menu, written using the freshest ingredients on hand and combining them to create tantalizing flavors. The Chef's Tasting consists of five small plates carefully paired with wines, each course flowing into the other with seamless perfection to provide the quintessential dining experience.

Executive Chef Andy Blanton is a graduate of the Culinary Arts Institute of Louisiana and was mentored by Frank Brigsten at Brigsten's Restaurant in New Orleans.

Some Guest Comments

Chef Blanton,

What a great experience for all of us. Lorie and I have done a fair amount of eating around the country but our benchmark was usually based on what we had eaten at your cafe over the years. Well that mark is now much higher. (thanks for making us comfortable in everyway...especially our violation of dress code...we didn't want the boys to know.)

Shane, Lorie's boy and Curt, his friend, never stopped talking about the food and the total event as a whole. Curt was the one who didn't think he liked crab; he does now. He also mentioned to us later that he hated mushroom; he doesn't anymore.

As for Lorie and I, we want to thank you and your staff, including your "special" reservationist, for providing a perfect evening. Now you are going to have to figure out what you will prepare for us for our encore visit.

Sincerely and thanks again,

Bob and Lorie

PS: At the end of the meal, you asked us what our favorite dish was. After digesting the meal both literally and figuratively, we loved everything. However the following dishes are what stood out.

Curt and Shane: Elk Loin (They asked whether you could do 7 courses of elk steak. I said yes but the dessert might be a little "tough." Lorie: Crab Saute Me: Sea Bass

Thank you again

My boyfriend and I just got back from our first trip to Big Mountain. We had dinner the first night (Feb 8, 2009) at Cafe Kandahar and it was wonderful!! I did the tasting menu with the wine pairing and thought everything was fabulous! I had asked our server (but then forgot before I left) if I could get a copy of the menu so I would know what wines were on there. I would love to purchase some to enjoy at home. Is it possible for you to email me the tasting menu from February 8th? Or maybe just your featured wines? Thanks so much!!

Good morning, Andy. Let me begin by discussing cosmic star alignment. Wow! What an incredible experience the other night. Your restaurant was fabulous and we enjoyed the hell out of it. Don't tell my son, Jon, I said hell lest he charge me 20 push-ups. It is true. Karen won't stop talking about it and I can't stop thinking about it.

Our compliments to the staff and certainly to the chef.

Tell your parents we said hello and we continue the fight for the Marines and Sailors. If you are ever in the Chicago area you have a place to stay. We will see you next time.

Warm Regards and Semper Fidelis (Noooo, I am not in the army, ha ha)

Hi Dalise, As usual we had a GREAT dinner with Andy and the gang, what a great way to spend Erin's birthday!!! Thank everyone!

Andy- I hope WSJ takes me up and features your fine restaurant and dishes. The Howards have impeccable tastes in food and wine, as again proved by the selection of your establishment to entertain Penny and me. Keep up the good work.

My friends and I were in Whitefish last week and dined at Café Kandahar on August 15th for dinner.  You may remember that a member of my group stopped to speak to you because she completed the culinary school and has worked in several restaurants in the US and Paris.  My palate is not as refined as hers, but my dining experience was wonderful and I wanted to take the time to thank you, your sous chefs, and your front staff for the excellent food and service.  Just by chance, I was wondering if you could ask the sommelier what Riesling was served with the wild salmon that evening.  It is absolutely the best white wine I have had (I am more of a red wine fan), and I would like to purchase some to sip on in Texas.  Kudos to all of you for such a fine establishment!  Marty

Bravo Cafe Kandahar

HI Dalise! I wanted to send a quick note to say THANK YOU for assisting with the reservations for Mr. Bruce Smith and party. He came back with rave reviews of the food and said it was hands down the BEST meal he had ever eaten!

Thank you again- Kellie

Dalise,

What a pleasure - good food, good service and a wonderful chef! What a great experience. The "Dalise" sauce was so wonderful. Next time I'm in town, we certainly eat there again!

Andrew misses his Mom!!!

Bob

Dalise, Our Chef’s table dinner was outstanding and far exceeded our expectations. The menu was absolutely perfect! Thank you so much. I’ve told everyone how great it was, so I suspect we’ll find a group and come back this summer. Thanks again for your help. Janice

Dalise,

Please tell Andy that the dinner on Tuesday was the greatest ever! He did a very good job and the food was incredible.

I look forward to more dinners soon. Thanks for the birthday wishes.

When in August do you suspect to have tastings?

Cheers,

Clay

We recently dined at your restaurant twice while on our kids spring break and it was awesome. We live in Florida, surrounded by wonderful restaurants, but your establishment was one of the best places we have ever experienced. Your staff was terrific, (the gentleman with the beard was great, the waitress who suggested the McCrea wine was great and the tall waiter that had spent some time in Atlanta as a manager of TGI Fridays was superb.

I have one suggestion, print a cookbook and sell it at the front desk. The food was so delicious I wanted to get the recipes for everything we ate. By the way, in the latest issue of Paula Deans magazine, your mouth watering rack of lamb and sea bass are featured, both of which I would love the recipe for. Anyway, thank you again for a great experience and we will see you this summer.

Ty

Dalise,

Sorry I didn't return your phone call on Saturday. Unfortunately, I didn't get the message until the following day at which point I thought it was too late to bother you on a Sunday morning. Just wanted to let you know that dinner was fabulous. I think that was the best meal I've had on one of our ski trips and I know that everyone felt well-attended to. We had a great time, great food and really enjoyed the entire evening.

Thanks again for everything.

Lee Ann

I just wanted to thank you for an excellent meal that capped our WMR visit beautifully. Our group of 9 ate there Saturday night after a fantastic week of skiing, dog sledding, and snowmobiling. We were all very impressed with your restaurant, staff, and food. Except for my son, who fell asleep in his pasta. J

Thanks again.

Last night I, and a party of three, had dinner at your place and I felt there were three reason's that I should make the time to write this message.

1. the Food! Wow is all I can say... it was exceptional! Everyone was blown away not only with the presentation (which was exceptional) but the flavors and how each element complimented and enhanced each other... Wonderful!

2. Our Server! Jerianna... As good as the food! She was exceptional! Friendly, informative, knowledgeable, and super helpful with the decision process and recommendations. She truly enhanced the experience.

3. The Host! A true professional! Warm Friendly and always updating us with regards to when we would be seated. and once seated checking on us throughout the evening.

It is the people as much as the food that makes a dining experience exceptional... Cafe Kandahar obviously has the winning formula... don't change a thing!

Though I singled out 3 reasons for this email I must say the entire wait staff were equally as attentive, friendly, and sincere... compliments to them as well!

I will certainly make Cafe Kandahar a must next time I am in Whitefish Montana.

Sincerely, Jim

Greetings Dalise,

I want to thank you, Andy, and the rest of the fine staff of Cafe Kandahar for the fantastic job you all did to make our son's wedding rehearsal dinner a memorable and enjoyable experience for our guests. Despite the road construction and you having to do two back to back large party dinners, you pullled it off without a hitch. The lobby area was a great place for our cocktail hour. The elk and cheese dishes were terrific. Everyone loved their dinners. We are so happy that we chose Cafe Kandahar for this event and especially appreciate your patience and assistance during the planning stage. Thanks again for everything. The next time we come back to Big Sky country, I hope to be able to try one of the wine dinner events. Best of luck to you and Andy for continued success for your fine restaurant.

Sincerely, Rob and Tammy
